The Slippery Rock University football team won their final game of the season by beating East Stroudsburg on Saturday by a final of 57-15.
Leading the way for the Rock was quarterback Don King III, who threw for 527 yards and 7 touchdowns on 28 completions. Marcus Johnson, who caught 10 passes for 237 yards and four scores, led the receiving corps. Other leading receivers included Taishan Tucker (four receptions, 92 yards), and Drew Scales (six receptions, 87 yards, 2 touchdowns. King’s performance broke school single game records for yards and touchdowns. Johnson’s yardage broke a school record, and his touchdown mark matched a school record. The offense also scored 30 points in under six minutes in the third quarter.
Defensively, the Rock were led by linebackers Anthony Zappone (12 tackles, one sack, one interception, two tackles for a loss, and one touchdown), and Butler graduate Bob Vernick (12 tackles). The defense held East Stroudsburg to 225 total yards.
Prior to and at the conclusion of the game, the Rock’s 22 senior players were honored. The senior class finished their careers with three PSAC West Championships, two PSAC Championships, three appearances in the Division II National Playoffs, and an overall record of 37-12 (which includes a home record of 22-1).
With the win on Saturday, the Rock (7-4) has posted eight straight winning seasons, with the 2016 season as the first winning season for first year Head Coach Shawn Lutz.
