The fourth open enrollment period under the Affordable Care Act began Tuesday.
Officials with the PA Insurance Department say the rate increases for health insurance premiums average about 32 percent overall.
“The rate increases are a little higher than what we would have wanted,” Ali Fogarty with the state insurance department said. “What you don’t see in that number, however, is that in 2016, 78 percent of consumers who purchased health insurance through the federal exchange were eligible for subsidies.”
Most people should be eligible for subsides to offset the increased cost of plans.
“It’s estimated 75 percent of returning marketplace consumers will be able to find a plan for less than $100 a month,” Fogarty said.
Limited selection is one of the hurdles Pennsylvanians will face when buying or switching plans on healthcare.gov.
Insurers Aetna and United Healthcare will not be part of the online marketplace in 2017. People must now find coverage with either Highmark or UPMC.
You can buy or switch plans on healthcare.gov through Jan. 31.
