As we count down to Election Day next week, our newsroom will look at some of the contested races throughout Butler County.
In the 12th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (which includes a portion of southern Butler County), longtime lawmaker and incumbent Daryl Metcalfe is up against political newcomer Christian Rieger.
Rieger recently moved to Seven Fields and says he has always been interested in public service.
“Public service was something that has always interested me and something I wanted to undertake,” Rieger said in an interview.
If elected, Rieger says he would focus on community development and infrastructure, property tax reform and bringing more money into schools.
“The 12th District, southern Butler County, is one of the fastest growing areas in western Pennsylvania,” he said. “And I think there needs to be a greater commitment and greater effort to bring more money into the area.”
He also noted he wants to try and revamp efforts in Harrisburg in property tax reform.
“I know it’s been kicked around for many years now but I think it’s close to happening,” he said.
Rieger is running against State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, who is seeking a 10th term in office. Rieger says while he respects Metcalfe’s passion and willingness to hold strong to his beliefs, he believes they hold different views on the role a legislator should play in the local community.
The 2016 General Election is on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
