A law put forward by a local lawmaker concerning texting while driving is heading to the desk of Governor Tom Wolf.
State Representative Jaret Gibbons sponsored House Bill 2025, which would increase penalties for texting while driving accidents that result in serious injury.
Rep. Gibbons is a Democrat representing parts of Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties.
The bill would provide a sentencing enhancement of up to five years for crashes involving texting while driving that result in death. Similar incidents resulting in serious injury would include a two year sentencing enhancement.
House Bill 2025 is also known as Daniel’s Law in memory of Daniel Gallatin of Lawrence County with died in May of 2013 while riding a motorcycle when hit by a texting driver. The bill is expected to be signed into law by the governor soon.
