A father and his two young children were able to safely escape a Saturday night fire at their Butler City home.
The blaze started about 10:30 p.m. at a single story home with an attic crawl space in the 500 block of East Jefferson Street, near the Honey Bear Mini-Mart.
Firefighters say the man was attempting to cook french fries on the stove when he stepped away to let the grease heat up. When he arrived, the kitchen was on fire.
Authorities say the fire quickly spread. The father was able to wake up his two young children- a 2-year-old and a 7-month old- and get them out. No one was hurt.
Damage is estimated at roughly $27,000. The home is not livable.
Butler City Firefighters say there were no working smoke alarms in the home. They urge anyone living in the city that has questions or problems with obtaining or installing a smoke alarm to give them a call. You can reach the Butler City Fire Department by calling 724-283-4200 or stopping by their facility on North Washington Street.
