The union for faculty and coaches at Pennsylvania’s 14 state-run universities will walk off the job one week from today if a labor deal is not reached.
Should the strike happen, it would affect more than 5,000 members of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties.
Ben Shaevitz is president of the APSCUF union at Slippery Rock University. He said in an interview late last week that he was optimistic a deal could be reached but not without compromise.
“It really is going to take both sides to sit down at the table and negotiate, which involves compromise, and get it done,” Shaevitz said.
If a strike does happen next week, there are a lot of questions regarding what will happen to SRU students currently attending the fall semester of classes.
“We don’t have the contingency plan about what will happen,” he said. “We (the union) have not been part of deciding that.”
Last month, California University of Pennsylvania released a statement about the possible strike. It said if there is a strike, they will remain open. Students should plan to attend classes every day and professors are not required to participate in the work stoppage.
On Tuesday, Edinboro University sent emails to their students saying they will remain open as well.
More negotiating sessions are planned for this weekend.
