It’s still a possibility that the Butler Area School Board could apply for a state exception to raise property taxes above the state-mandated index for next school year.
Members of the Butler Area School Board Finance Committee met Monday night and Vice-Chairperson Leland Clark asked board members to vote on a motion that would prohibit the board from raising real estate taxes about the maximum. Three of those attending the meeting voted in favor but three said more information was needed.
Director of Business Services Deborah Brandstetter informed the committee that the index determined by the state for Butler for next year is 3.3 percent- which works out to 3.23 mills. If a tax increase of that size was approved, the new total for Butler would be just over 101, mills meaning an additional $1.3 million would be collected.
Brandstetter continues to work to prepare a preliminary budget for board consideration in December when a vote will be taken to decide about petitioning the state to tax above that index.
