The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources have released the results from a survey that will shape the future of Pennsylvania’s Outdoor Recreation Plan.
The survey saw over 8,000 responses and showed signs of inequality for use of the outdoors for the older adults and lower income residents.
According to the survey, health limitations was a primary reason why older Pennsylvania’s were unable to access the outdoors while those making less than $75,000 spent less time in those spaces.
Nearly half of the participants in the study said local recreation areas need upgrades while a third said they plan trips around outdoor recreation with half supporting local businesses during the outings.
A draft of the 2025-2029 Outdoor Recreation Plan will be shared and open to the public starting Feb. 3 until March 3.
