Slippery Rock University graduate and Philipsburg, Pennsylvania native Matt Adams signed a one-day contract to retire a St. Louis Cardinal after 15 years of professional baseball. Adams was drafted out of The Rock in 2009 by the Cardinals in the 2009 MLB draft. He spent 5-1/2 seasons with the Cardinals, batting .270 with 55 home runs, before being traded to the Atlanta Braves in 2017 when the Braves lost first baseman Freddie Freeman to an injury. Adams also played for Colorado and Washington, where he won a World Series. Adams is in the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame, and had his number retired at The Rock.
