The Penguins continued to struggle with the three-on-three overtime periods this season, falling to 3-9 in the extra time. The Penguins power play also continues to struggle, going 0-for-5 last night.
Rickard Rakell and Drew O’Connor scored the Penguins goals. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 20 of 23 shots from the Maple Leafs in his ninth straight start. Auston Matthews scored his 65th goal of the season for Toronto.
The Pens are now tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the final Eastern Conference Playoff spot with 84 points. The Penguins will host Detroit Thursday.
The Red Wings host the Washington Capitals tonight. The Caps have 83 points. The Philadelphia Flyers also have 83 points. They visit Montreal tonight.
