Incoming governor Josh Shapiro says his new administration will be working on a plan to address gun violence in the state.
Shapiro says the level of violence in some parts of the state is “absolutely unacceptable.” One area that Shapiro says he’ll be looking at is making sure local communities are properly staffed with police officers.
“Working with municipalities to make sure [police] are properly trained and that they look like the communities they come from,” Shapiro said. “We’ll be working with the legislature to build on the anti-violence investments that Governor Wolf has already made, to invest more in initiatives like that.”
Shapiro also said there are other factors at play like a lack of quality education in some communities, ignoring mental health concerns, and not enough economic opportunities in areas ravaged by violence.
