Two children from Connoquenessing were recognized last night for their efforts during a fatal fire earlier this year.
Mika and Tucker Perez were honored for what they did in an early morning fire back on February 27th on Reiber Road. Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Captain Matt McConnell explains what the kids did.
“Mika did the right thing in getting her older brother alerted to what was going on. Tucker, I just learned last week, found a pair of goggles for her to wear and tried to find a mask for her to wear before they made it out of the building,” McConnell said.
The two children then went to their neighbor Scott McCue’s house to alert him of the fire. Unfortunately, the Perez children’s father died in the fire. But, McConnell said their reaction was paramount in a quick response.
“They alerted Scott, who called 911. He came down and knew where the fire was and he was able to tell us. That allowed us to get a quick knock down on the fire since we knew it was in the basement. Which was absolutely necessary for us to get that fire knocked down as quickly as we could, ” McConnell said.
Mika, Tucker, and Scott McCue also received a state house recognition from Marci Mustello.
“Giving these citations out is normally an occasion to recognize heroism and bravery,” Mustello said. “I think it is so fitting to present three of these citations from the Pennsylvania House to Scott, Tucker, and Mika.”
