Local drivers are advised to be aware of poor weather conditions and make use of available technology when considering travel plans.
To help make decisions as to whether to travel during winter weather, motorists are encouraged to check conditions on thousands of roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions by visiting the 511PA website, which is free and available 24 hours a day. The site also provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to hundreds of traffic cameras.
PennDOT representative Tina Gibbs explains the “Check My Route” tool which allows users to see plow truck statuses and travel alerts along a specific route.
“If you are on the website, and you click on traffic conditions, you’ll see a button that says ‘plow trucks’ and it will bring you up a map that will show you little truck icons all throughout a map of Pennsylvania,” Gibbs said.
She also says the map can get very detailed.
“Find your truck in the area. Click on the truck and it will zoom you in on the Butler area. If you click on the smaller truck, it will zoom in even further and show you a bunch of little red dots that will show the exact route that truck has gone on.”
511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
