Butler City Council no longer has a vacancy after a local man was named to the open position.
After being chosen by a unanimous vote of the seated council members in attendance, Mayor Bob Dandoy administered the oath of office to Councilman Daniel Herr.
After receiving six letters of interest, Mayor Dandoy spoke to two candidates face to face before making the decision that he was joined in by the other members of council.
“What we discussed first was an overriding philosophy of what we wanted out of the candidates. And then we saw who applied, there were two that rose to the surface I think in everybody’s case,” Dandoy said. “And then we just started having one-on-one conversations.”
Herr has been a city resident since 1992 and is a retired PA State Trooper currently employed as a school police officer by the Mars Area School District.
“I have never served in a political office. It actually goes back to when I was a state trooper, and I would complain about a lot of the stuff that was going on. And my supervisor at the time said you have two choices, either quit complaining or get promoted,” Herr said.
“That really stuck with me. I did see some things that I would like to see happen here in the City. And I had two choices: either complain about it or throw my hat into the ring and see what I could do.”
Herr will finish the council term of Mayor Dandoy which runs through 2023. Council responsibilities were shifted a bit with this appointment as Herr will focus on Parks and Public Property, Councilman Don Shearer will serve as Director of Accounts and Finance, and Councilman Mike Walter will lead the Streets Department.
