Investigators are in Pittsburgh to examine what happened when a bridge collapsed last Friday morning. According to PennDOT, the Fern Hollow Bridge had been given an overall poor rating on their grading scale.
However, no major upgrades had been made to the bridge in years.
President Joe Biden was in Pittsburgh Friday and said that it’s necessary to make investments into infrastructure projects like bridge repair.
“A bridge more than 50 years old collapsed right here in Pittsburgh. It had been rated in poor condition for the past 10 years. There are another 3,300 bridges here in Pennsylvania, some of which are just as old and just as decrepit condition as that bridge was,” Biden said.
The bridge handled about 14,000 vehicles each day, along with a number of pedestrians.
