Those who need help paying water-related expenses are encouraged to apply for help today through a new state assistance program.
The Low-Income Home Water Assistance Program, also known as LIHWAP, helps low-income renters and homeowners pay water bills.
“This temporary assistance program is established through the American Rescue Plant Act and the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021,” Acting Secretary of Department of Human Services Meg Snead said. “Pennsylvania received approximately $43.2 million to provide water assistance to those in need.”
LIHWAP is an effort of the PA Department of Human Services that offers assistance in the form of a cash grant that is sent directly to the utility company or a crisis grant for households in immediate danger of being without drinking or wastewater services.
“This program is for those who have past due water bills, had their service terminated, or have received a notice that their service will be terminated in 60 days,” Snead said. “Households can receive water assistance grants for both drinking water services and waste water services.”
Those interested in applying for assistance are asked to long onto the DHS website or apply in person at the local county assistance office.
