Despite missing some key players due to injury, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 last night at PPG Paints Arena. Goaltender Casey DeSmith had his second shutout of Buffalo in the last two weeks, stopping 36 shots. Jared McCann led the Pens with two goals, and Radim Zohorna, making his NHL debut, scored his first career goal.
Sidney Crosby had three assists to reach 1,300 in his career. Jake Guentzel scored an empty-net goal for his 14th of the season. The Pens were 2-of-4 on the power play, and held Buffalo 0-for-4.
Buffalo’s general manager Kevyn Adams served as head coach last night, after head coach Don Granato and assistant coach Matt Ellis were placed on the league’s virus protocol list.
The Pens will host the New York Islanders Saturday and again Monday. Both games have a 7pm face-off. WISR pre-game begins at 6:30pm.
The Pens remain two points behind second-place Washington. They trail the Islanders by four points. The Caps and Islanders were both winners last night.
Winger Kasperi Kapanen is now out “week-to-week” with a lower body injury suffered in Wednesday’s game against the Sabres. He joins Evgeni Malkin, Brandon Tanev, Teddy Blueger and Jason Zucker on the injured list.
