Pennsylvania officials are encouraging residents to buy local produce this summer.
Liam Migdail is with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.
“Pennsylvania has the highest number of farms out of any state in the country that sells directly to its residents,” Migdail said. “And that really provides an incredible opportunity here because it means you get to meet the farmer who’s growing your food.”
Migdail said when you buy from local farmers, that money stays in the community and helps the overall local economy.
“When you buy local, you’re supporting the local economy,” Migdail said. “Not only are you supporting the farmer who lives and works in your community; but then that farmer also spending money in that community.”
“They’re getting their equipment locally, they’re buying feed, they’re employing people, so when you put those dollars into a local farm business, it benefits the community overall,” Migdail said.
Migdail also notes that when you buy food from local farmers, it is also fresh.
