The City of Butler could soon be designated as a Monarch City.
Councilman Jeff Smith introduced plans for the city to create pollinator gardens in Ritts, Father Marinaro, and Memorial Parks this spring.
Smith has also spoken with a representative of Butler Area School District about having students involved with helping to create these areas.
“There’s just a lot where this can go to, it’s more than just ‘Plant a bunch of pretty flowers,’” Smith said. “I’m excited about it. It’s not going to solve financial problems, but it’s going to give kids something to be proud of.”
It is only expected to cost the city a minimal amount to clear the approximately 20 foot by 75 foot areas and get the seeds.
Monarch City USA is a non-profit organization that provides help for cities helping butterflies recover by restoring habitat.
