Union faculty and coaches at Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities have set a strike date.
The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties- known as APSCUF- announced Friday they will strike on Wednesday, October 19 if an agreement has not yet been reached with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
“The State System has asked for tens of millions more in concessions from faculty than they have from anyone else,” President of APSCUF Ken Mash said in a statement. “Faculty offered a major healthcare concession, but the State System did not change their offer. We sat with them for days, and they gave us a proposal that purposely went backward. They are intent on hurting educational quality, rewarding themselves while simultaneously cutting the salaries of our lowest-paid members by 20 percent, and balancing their books off the backs of their students and our faculty. We will not be a party to it. Period.”
The union had previously said they would strike no later than Oct. 30. A recent five-day negotiating session ended in a stalemate. Another round of bargaining sessions is expected as early as this weekend.
Faculty and coaches at the 14 universities- which includes Slippery Rock University in Butler County- have been working without a contract since June 30, 2015.
