A new program at the Butler County Prison will let some inmates visit with their children who are in the care of Children and Youth Services.
Butler County Prison Warden Joe DeMore told our newsroom, “There was grant money left from Children and Youth Services and we’re changing an area to give the kids contact visit time. The only ones who will get that are the kids that are monitored by CYS.”
DeMore said that the program will go into effect once the area in which the visitations will occur has been remodeled.
Initially, this pilot program will only be open to inmates with children being cared for by CYS but Warden DeMore hopes that an expansion in the future will yield positive results for many families.
“The goal is to help give some inmates in here some motivation to behave and they could maybe gain those contact visits with their kids. The biggest thing is trying to help the children by seeing their parents and the other end of that is, inmates seeing their kids too. I think it will help form that relationship and bond make it better,” DeMore explained.
Currently, the only way children are able to visit parents in the prison is through the glass in the visiting room on the phone.
