As harvest season approaches, farmers are being warned of a potential safety hazard in the air.
Hazardous gases can build up in the days after crops are stored in silos. Of particular concern are corn crops that have received nitrogen fertilizer.
Penn State farm safety expert Dave Hill says hot and dry weather during this year’s growing season has increased the risk.
Farmers are advised to make sure silos are well ventilated, and to stay away for up to three weeks after a silo is filled.
