Local residents are being advised to exercise caution following reports of a recent phone scam.
According to the office of Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe, a male identifying himself as “deputy Mike Jacobs” or some other similar name has been making calls attempting to intimidate people into paying money.
This scammer is spoofing the Butler County Sheriff’s phone number to make it look like he is calling on legitimate business. A local expert on spoofing numbers believes that the calls are actually coming from the Greensburg area.
Anyone who receives a call like this asking for payment of a fine or to meet to deal with an outstanding warrant should not engage in any conversation and hang up immediately.
