Faculty members at Pennsylvania’s 14 state universities have voted to call for a strike.
According to the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, over 90 percent of union faculty members who voted favored authorizing a strike. About 80 percent of union members participated in the vote.
Faculty leaders say they will not set a specific strike date until they meet for negotiations at least once more, maintaining a strike remains the ‘last resort.’ The next bargaining session with management is set for Friday.
The union represents about 5,500 faculty and coaches at 14 state schools- including Slippery Rock University in Butler County. The union members are objecting to several issues including health care costs, salary cuts, and to discontinue retiree health care coverage for future faculty members.
