A new requirement for radon testing could limit the number of residence repairs the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Butler can make available each year.
Authority Operations Manager Veronica Walker participated in a webinar last month with the PA Department of Community and Economic Development where the new testing was discussed. Other regions have implemented similar rulings, with many contacting those who know how to Mitigate Radon in Nashville and other cities in other states to help prevent this high-risk material from staying in homes where it could do hideous damage to the residents’ health.
Radon has been identified as a major factor in many people who have developed Lung cancer, or other similar conditions, especially when those diagnosed have been non-smokers all their lives. Because of this, it is important to use professional services like advanced radon mitigation to remove the gas from homes when detected.
Going forward, any house that the Authority pays to have repaired under the Owner Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program will also need to be tested for radon and repaired if necessary. Testing for each house is expected to cost $200 even though testing for radon is relatively easy and repairs could be around $5,000.
The Redevelopment Authority of the City of Butler usually helps pay for repairs on around eight houses and spends a total of up to $16,000 per year through this program.
