Marcus Martin was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Drew Scales was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division, according to the first weekly awards announcement that came from the league office Tuesday.
The Rock duo helped lead No. 11 Slippery Rock to a 31-28 victory over New Haven in the season opener last Saturday.
Martin spearheaded the defensive effort with 11 total tackles, four tackles for loss and 1-1/2 sacks. The sacks both came in the fourth quarter and were crucial as Slippery Rock rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final quarter.
Martin’s career sack total is now 33, just one game into his junior season, establishing a new Slippery Rock career record. He topped the previous record of 32 that was set by SRU Hall of Famer Matt Kinsinger.
Martin is now just a half sack away from tying the all-time PSAC career record of 33.5, set by Andrew Cohen of West Chester last fall.

In addition to the offensive numbers, Scales made a huge impact on the SRU comeback with his ability in the return game. After New Haven scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to go up 28-14, he returned the ensuing kickoff 64 yards into UNH territory to spark the comeback.
The Rock will visit West Chester this Saturday. Kick-off is noon. Pre-game is 11:30am on The Rock Station 97.7fm and at 977rocks.com
