Tony Watson allowed three home runs in the ninth inning last night as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-7 at PNC Park. The loss was the Bucs eighth in a row. The Pirates have overcome a 5-0 St. Louis lead, and Watson was one strike away from closing the game when the Cards started knocking the ball out of the park. The Pirates are now 5-1/2 games back for the final N.L. Wild Card with 26 games remaining in their season. They are now 67-69 overall.
Jung Ho Kang, making his first start since returning from the disabled list hit two home runs, his 15th and 16th of the season. Pirate starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong allowed five earned runs over his four innings of work, including four in the first inning.
The Pirates and Cardinals wrap up their series tonight at 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm. The Bucs host Cincinnati for four games beginning Thursday.
