A Pennsylvania lawmaker from one of the areas of the state hardest-hit by heroin addiction is pushing for the legislature to address the need for detox facilities in an upcoming special session.
Rep. Bryan Barbin of Cambria County is sponsoring a bill that would establish eight regional detox centers across the state for people addicted to heroin and prescription drugs.
The centers would be funded with tobacco settlement money.
Barbin says recent discussion of the issue should prepare lawmakers for a special session on heroin addiction in September.
Since addiction is so destructive and harmful for many people, it is important to try and get help for everybody that needs it. Those suffering from addiction should never be afraid to check in to a rehab facility if drug problems are starting to ruin life for them and their loved ones.
In some cases though, addiction can be a problem shared by people within friendship groups and even relationships. When this occurs, the best solution could come in the form of couples rehabs, designed to help couples tackle their addictions together. This can make rehab much easier for people and could be worth considering for anyone that feels this may be relevant to them.
“We’re going to look at the need to get detox centers located throughout the commonwealth so that if someone is in a position where they want help, we can get it to them,” Barbin said.
Pennsylvania currently has 59 detox centers with a total of 1,000 beds…however not all providers accept Medicaid. Facilities that do accept Medicaid report significant capacity issues.
