A sale of the former Broad Street Elementary School to a local non-profit organization will negatively impact the city of Butler, according to Mayor Tom Donaldson.
“There should have been more effort made to sell it to a for profit entity. The city is being overrun by properties that are non-taxable and so the Broad Street School building was a great opportunity for the city to land a for profit business.”
The Butler Area School Board approved the sale of the property Monday night to the ARC of Butler County for $400,000. The ARC currently operates out of two facilities; one on North Washington Street and the other in the Pullman Commerce Center on Hollywood Drive.
Councilwoman Kathy Kline has not heard the details of the ARC plans for the building but she would be hesitant to make any special accommodations.
“I don’t know what may be asked of the city to change zoning or anything. If the ARC comes and says we need to have this, this, and this, and these ordinances and this zoning needs changed to accommodate us, I don’t know if that is not going to be in the best interest of the city.”
A hearing for the sale of Broad Street is expected to be set for early fall, until that time other offers for the facility will still be considered.
