The Butler Area School District has agreed to the sale of the former Broad Street Elementary School.
At their meeting Monday night, the board voted by a 7-2 margin to accept the offer of $400,000 for the property made by the ARC of Butler County. Bill Halle and John Conrad voted against the deal.
Board members who voted to accept the offer pointed out that there are currently no other offers for the property and no concrete plans presented for viable alternative uses. The letter from the ARC formally expressing their offer did not have any date of expiration but did say that the sale was contingent on approval from Butler City Council for their purposes of use. The ARC is currently based in two different buildings in the downtown area.
The district formerly had a deal in place to sell the building to the ARC for $475,000 before the board voted to rescind that offer in December. Soon after, the board could not come to an agreement on an offer of $530,000 for the property from JM Beatty. The average value of the appraisals of the property done by the district is $456,000. A request for proposal to market the property to a wider market only received one bidder earlier in the summer and no action was taken to move ahead with that plan.
A hearing date for the sale before a judge will likely be set for a couple months from now during which time additional prospective buyers will have the chance to make offers. The hearing for the sale of the former Oakland Elementary School is scheduled for September 14th at 3 p.m.
