A group of Mars students have been able to donate money to the district as a result of their efforts on a recent local television show.
Claire Staresinic and Rebecca Devorak informed the Mars School Board during a meeting Tuesday that they were on a team that finished in the top nine of 81 total schools competing in the Home Town High Q on KDKA-TV Saturday at 11 a.m. This is a quiz show that tests the knowledge of students from local schools in different areas.
By making it as far as they did, the Mars team was awarded $1,500 to put toward a benefit for the district. The students chose to devote the money to the area of Education, Library, and Media Resources. On the advice of the school librarian the funds will purchase computer software from Turnitin.com that will help students avoid plagiarism.
The episode featuring Mars students will be re-airing on Sept. 3. Mars was eliminated from advancing by South Butler’s team who would go on to win the overall competition.
