Manager Clint Hurdle placed outfielder Gregory Polanco in the fourth spot in his lineup last night, and Polanco responded with a tie-breaking three-run home run that propelled the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the San Diego Padres last night at PNC Park. It was Polanco’s team-leading 16th home run of the season. It was also Polanco’s first start in a week because of a sore shoulder. David Freese added three hits and scored three times. Rookie pitcher Chad Kuhl went six innings last night, allowing two earned runs and five hits. He walked four and struck out four to earn his second major league win. Tony Watson closed the game. Despite allowing a home run in the ninth, he earned his third save.
The Bucs and Padres meet again tonight at 7:05pm. Ryan Vogelsong will start for the Pirates. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm. The Pirates remain 2-1/2 games back in the Wild Card race.
