The first so-called “problem-solving” court in Butler County- known as Drug Treatment Court- will receive a big recognition Wednesday by Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Debra McCloskey Todd.
Justice Todd will present the court’s team members with a Certificate of Accreditation, which will stay with the court for three years.
The accreditation process consisted of submitting all policy and procedural paperwork detailing how the Drug Treatment Court is being run and what it is doing for local residents enrolled.
Since its inception five years ago, the Drug Treatment Court has had 18 individuals successfully complete the program and of those, only one has returned to the criminal justice system.
The court serves as an alternative to jail time and instead focuses on what is really fueling the offenders’ criminal activity (whether it be drugs, alcohol, family issues, etc.) and putting the offender through intense rehab programs to combat the issues.
Butler’s court is the 18th specialty court to receive this honor since the state started the accreditation program four years ago.
