Pennsylvania American Water is replacing 900 feet of pipe on Birch and Jackson Streets in downtown Butler.
Company spokesman Gary Lobaugh told our newsroom, “This is a $200,000 project that will replace cast iron main that was installed nearly 70 years ago with upgraded ductile iron that will improve reliability.”
Lobaugh says that the project is expected to take three weeks as long as the weather permits.
The repairs come after the old line broke in that area last week and the company decided to do the upgrade now. Service will only be affected for a few customers including a couple businesses.
“This is limited to five customers that we anticipate being directly disrupted. There’s a mix of businesses in that area including a YWCA that we expect will have some minimal disruption of maybe two or three hours when we begin to transfer services from the old main onto the new main,” Lobaugh explained.
Project hours will be Monday through Friday beginning at 7:30 a.m. and continuing through 5 p.m. A flagger will be in place to direct traffic while work is taking place.
