The construction of 10 historic murals on various city buildings has begun in downtown Butler.
The event is called the ‘Butler Brush-Up’ and is done by a group of artists known as the ‘Walldogs.’
Adam May is a ‘Walldog’ who traveled from Bloomington, Illinois.
“This is year number 12 for me,” May said.
Actual work on the murals- which depict snapshots in time including the Old Butler Brewery, the ARMCO plant and the Bantam Reconnaissance Car- began last Thursday night and will continue through Saturday…but planning for the event has been in the works for months.
“The process started about two years ago…organizing the historical component of what would be painted,” May said. “Art-work was approved a few weeks ago. We started sketching last night and we will continue painting through Saturday.”
May says about 200 artists are in town for this year’s event. The Walldogs typically host one to two events- in different cities- each year.
“From All Around The World”
The ‘Butler Brush-Up’ has brought artists from nearly every state and several far-away countries to downtown Butler.
Mace Marx traveled from Barbados.
“Everyone keeps saying ‘its so hot!”…this is business as usual for me,” Marx said with a chuckle.
Marx became a ‘Walldog’- which is what the artists call themselves- about 13 years ago. Her specialty is hand painting.
“I’ve been in the islands for so long I never had access to the technology of stenciling and laying out the vinyl,” she said. “When the paint is ready to go on, that’s when I step in.”
Adam May traveled from Bloomington, Illinois. It’s his first time in Pennsylvania.
“This is a cool little town,” he said. “It’s definitely busier than I thought it was going to be.”
The award for ‘farthest traveled’ went to a painter from New Zealand.
The ‘Walldogs’ will be in town through Saturday constructing 10 murals on downtown Butler buildings.
