Opioid addiction has reached new record levels in recent years as more people find themselves relying on the pain killer for various reasons. What starts as a simple prescription to provide pain relief can end up ruining lives.
Thankfully, there is now a lot more help available for addicts and their families than before this crisis as more awareness has been raised on the issue. For example, Klinic is Los Angeles based and provides a virtual addiction recovery support system for addicts. Instead of punishing addicts, more efforts are being made to promote recovery.
There are plenty of options for addicts both privately and publicly with new programs being announced throughout the country by various states and governors.
Closer to home, Governor Tom Wolf says more Pennsylvanians will be treated for opioid abuse, thanks to new funding in the recently enacted state budget.
More than $20 million in state and federal funding will be used to open 20 new treatment facilities, which the governor calls Centers of Excellence.
“The Centers for Excellence will provide vital, potentially life-saving coordination of care for Pennsylvanians struggling with the disease of addiction,” said DHS
Secretary Dallas. “Rather than just treating a person’s addiction, DHS will treat the entire patient through team-based treatment, with the explicit goal of
integrating behavioral health and primary care and, when necessary, evidence-based medication assisted treatment. As our strategy involves both behavioral
therapy and FDA approved medication that individuals take to help curb cravings and manage withdrawal symptoms, it can improve the odds of recovery.”
The additional money is expected to help as many as 4,500 Pennsylvanians starting this fall.
