Officials say a nationwide “jury duty” scam has moved into western Pennsylvania.
The Pittsburgh office of the U.S. Marshals Service said the scam involves a caller claiming to be a federal marshal, court office or other law enforcement official trying to collect a fine in lieu of arresting the victim for failure to report for jury duty.
The scammer then tells the victim he or she can avoid arrest by calling another number and providing a credit card number.
The U.S. Marshals Service does not call anyone to arrange payment of fines over the phone. Officials urge people to not provide personal or financial information to unknown callers, even if they sound legitimate. Officials note in order to appear more credible, the scammers may even provide information like badge numbers and the names of actual federal judges and courthouse addresses.
If you believe you were a victim of the jury duty scam, you are encouraged to report the incident to your local law enforcement department, U.S. Marshals Office or FBI office.
