PennDOT has moved up the timetable for Butler Transit Authority to get a compressed natural gas fueling station.
Originally scheduled for 2019, new plans have the station operational by sometime in 2018. The Transit Authority has already been given approval to purchase three 30 foot CNG Gillig buses. Approval for three additional buses of this kind is expected in the near future.
Surveyors are already measuring the current facility for renovations to accommodate the buses that are expected to begin in the next few months and be completed in 2017. The authority will need to make other arrangements for fueling once they have taken possession of the buses until the fueling station is operational.
A company called Trillium has a contract with the state to operate natural gas fueling stations across Pennsylvania including the one in Butler. As of now, Trillium has no plans to make the Butler station open to the public.
Transit Authority Executive Director John Paul plans to travel to the Gillig plant in California this October for a tour to better understand the buses. The expense of that pre-production meeting is covered under the grant the authority received to purchase the vehicles.
