The Pirates are back at .500 (41-41) for the first time since June 16. They begin a four game series today with the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch is at 2:15 p.m. and can be heard on WISR 680 AM. Jon Niese (6-6, 5.07 ERA) squares off against Carlos Martinez (7-5, 2.87 ERA).
The Pirates claimed St. Louis catcher Eric Fryer off of waivers yesterday afternoon. Rob Scahill for designated for assignment to make room for Fryer on the 40-man roster. A corresponding move has to be made as well to clear a space on the major league roster, with speculation surrounding a trip to the disabled list for Chris Stewart.
This will be the second stint with the Bucs for Fryer, who was here from 2010-2012. Over six seasons, Fryer has had 199 at-bats and is a lifetime .270 hitter. This year for the Cardinals thought, Fryer hit an outstanding .368 over 41 plate appearances.
