Slippery Rock University has been honored as a 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School.
“Since 2005, Slippery Rock University has reduced their energy usage by 22 percent, reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 18 percent, and increased the footprint of their campus; they’ve actually grown during that time, by almost a third,” Acting Secretary of Environmental Protection Patrick McDonnell said during a ceremony Wednesday at the State Capitol.
SRU Chief Financial Officer Dr. Amir Mohammadi also spoke about the university’s progress and what they are trying to accomplish.
“We at Slippery Rock University are proud of our accomplishments in reducing our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions but realize that this is just the beginning, Mohammadi said. “Preparing our students to be leaders for sustainability, scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs, who can face the challenges of the future way into the twenty-first century.”
The purpose of this prestigious national award is to recognize schools that reduce environmental impacts, improve wellness, and provide environmental education.
