The City of Butler Police Force anticipates responding to a record number of calls this year and Chief Ronald Brown would like to add more full time officers.
“As of the other day, the department has responded to 10,011 calls,” Brown told Butler City Council members during a meeting Tuesday. “We’re probably looking at 22,000-25,000 calls this year because we are just getting into what we call the busy season.”
There are currently 21 members of the Butler City Police Department with plans to fill two more vacant positions in the near future.
After that, four part-time officer positions have been budgeted but Brown would like to see two full-time officers instead.
It would be more cost effective, at least initially, for the city to go with Brown’s proposal.
“The four part-time officers would cost $141, 651.95. To hire two full-timers would be $102, 752.41,” Brown said.
Although council members agreed that safety of city residents is a priority, it was also agreed to delay acting on this proposal until after the special budget meeting in August.
