Slippery Rock University honored now retired head football coach and professor Dr. George Mihalik Friday for his 40-plus years of service to the institution with a dinner and also started two scholarships in his name. The scholarships will serve a future students majoring in Safety Management and future football student/athletes. Mihalik served as head football coach for 28 years before retiring after last season, but spent a total of 44 years as a player, coach and professor. He also was instumental in the development of the Safety Management program at The Rock, creating the curriculum for it in the 1980’s.
Many special guests and colleagues spoke in honor of Mihalik. Those guests included former SRU president Dr. Robert Aebersold, who was instumental in Mihalik’s hiring as head football coach, and former Rock running back Chuck Sanders, who went on to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sanders donated a new digital scoreboard to the Rock last year for Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
