Bats are an important part of our local environment but they could be in trouble.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for volunteers to help gather data about Appalachian Bat colony populations.
The spread of white-nose syndrome (WNS) has put bat colonies in danger. Volunteers are needed to help assess population trends through some simple fieldwork. Scout groups, 4-H clubs, local environmental organizations and homeowners are all invited to participate.
“Pennsylvanians can help us more fully gauge the impact of WNS by conducting a bat count this summer,” Nate Zalik, wildlife biologist, said. “We are especially urging people who have previously conducted a bat count for the Game Commission to participate again this year.”
