With the summer construction season well underway, PennDOT is reminding drivers to be aware.
‘Work Zone Safety Wednesdays’ is a new campaign that kicked off today and will run through the summer with various themes. Today’s theme is ‘Day in the Life of a Flagger.”
“A flagger’s job is vital to work zone safety,” PennDOT’s Deborah Casadei says. “Their job is to protect the workers behind them and guide the motorists and direct them safely through the work zone.”
In a work zone, drivers area advised to:
-Turn on their headlights
-Drive the posted work-zone speed limit
-Maintain a safe distance around vehicles. Don’t tailgate
-Expected the unexpected
-Be patient
Drivers are also reminded that fines are doubled and jail time is increased for drivers caught speeding, driving under the influence or failing to obey traffic control devices in an active work zone.
Casadei says the bottom line behind ‘Work Zone Safety Wednesdays’ is safety, for both road workers and rivers.
“PennDOT as an agency has lost 86 workers since 1970, that’s someone’s mother or father,” Cassadei says. “We want our workers to get home safely to their families.”
Last year, there were 13 work-zone crashes in Butler County. None of them resulted in a fatality.
