The Butler Area School Board is moving ahead with a plan to potentially outsource food service in the district but it won’t be with the company that is guaranteeing the largest profit.
At a special meeting Tuesday night, the board voted to advance a plan by The Nutrition Group that guarantees a profit for the district of $150,000 for the 2016-17 school year. If the district would choose to continue that agreement in future years, the company would guarantee that the district would break even. All profit would go into the district’s food service fund and not their general fund.
This plan includes The Nutrition Group taking over the management as well as the employees of the food service. Alternative proposals had the district continuing to employ food service workers while management would be outsourced to the third party vendor.
The board first voted on a motion to advance a plan by Metz Culinary Management that guaranteed a profit of $300,000 for the 2016-17 school year. That motion failed mostly due to some board members not trusting cost of food and supply estimates that seemed too low to be accurate.
The specifics of this deal will now be presented to the current food service employee union to see what counter proposal they are able to make to the district.
