The Mars Area School District is considering placing minimum participation requirements on some of their sporting teams.
According to Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley, the requirements would be established by the district’s Athletic Director with approval from the school board.
This new policy would mean different minimums for different sports but the numbers would be the same for girls and boys participating in the same sport. If a sport was not run a particular year due to a lower than minimum student interest, that sport could return the following year if interest returned above the minimum.
The board tabled any action to approve spending on supplemental coaching positions until next month when discussions about this issue will continue.
