The Mars Area School District will not raise taxes but they do plan on furloughing some staff in order to meet their budget for the 2016-17 school year.
Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley told the school board about the $45.8 million budget that includes four teaching positions being eliminated and three teacher furloughs.
The positions being eliminated are one middle school math position, one high school math position, one elementary reading position and one high school English position. Although some class sizes will increase, school officials say the staffing changes are mostly due to the fact that a change in Keystone exam requirements means fewer students will require remediation classes.
In addition, the district says between four and five support staff and administrative positions will be eliminated through attrition. Parking and technology fees will also increase. Even with these changes, $1.3 million will be needed from the general fund to balance the budget due to rising pension obligations.
The budget will be posted for public review and a final vote will be taken at the June meeting.
