The Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a sweep by the San Diego Padres with an 11-1 win last night. Pirate starting pitcher Gerrit Cole struck out seven batters over six innings. Cole did not allow a run on four hits. The Pirates had 11 hits in the game. Five Pirates had at least two hits.
The Bucs are in Arizona to begin a three game series with the Diamondbacks tonight at 9:40pm. Hear the game on WISR 680 beginning at 9:15pm. Jon Niese, who is 2-0, will start for the Pirates, who are now back to 8-8.
Jake Arrieta threw his second career no-hitter during Thursday night’s 16-0 win over the Reds in Cincinnati.
He walked four and struck out six. It was the first time the Reds have been held hitless in a regular season game since 1971. The Cubs are off to a league-best 12-4 start.
