We could be embarking on a summer filled with cicadas.
Officials say billions of cicadas are preparing to return after spending 17 years underground.
The bugs will be heard all over Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia once the soil they are living in warms to 64 degrees.
The United States Department of Agriculture states that the insects do not bite or sting but they do emit a “droning noise.”
This specific type of cicada is different than annual cicadas, which are larger and appear every summer in small numbers.
