The Pittsburgh Pirates lost their third consecutive game to the Detroit Tigers, falling 7-4 Thursday afternoon at PNC Park. The Pirates had 14 hits in the game, but left 12 men on base. John Jaso and David Freese had three hits each. Gerrit Cole took the loss, and his record falls to 0-2. He allowed two runs over six innings. Cole walked one and struck out five. The Pirate bullpen allowed five runs in relief of Cole.
The Bucs, who are now 5-5 overall and three games behind first-place Chicago, host the Milwaukee Brewers to begin a three-game series tonight at PNC Park. First pitch is 7:05pm. Jeff Locke will start for the Pirates. Jimmy Nelson for the Brewers. Hear the game on WISR 680am beginning at 6:40pm. The Brewers were one-hit by St. Louis pitcher Jaime Garcia Thursday.
The Pirates placed left-hander Cory Luebke on the 15-day disabled list, and recalled reliever Rob Scahill from Indianapolis.
The Pirates have also signed veteran pitcher Justin Masterson to a minor league contract. The 31-year old Masterson was an American League All-Star in 2013, but has struggled since. The Boston Red Sox released him last August, and he is recovering from shoulder surgery.
The Pirates received good news surrounding one of their top pitching prospects. Jameson Taillon returned to the mound Wednesday after missing two seasons due to injury. Taillon allowed one run over six innings for Triple-A Indianapolis. The former number one draft pick struck out six.
